The 2M alliance – which was formed between Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 2014, which started operating in 2015 in the east-west core routes since then. They have mutually agreed to terminate their partnership, from the year 2025.
The 2M alliance was created to increase the operational efficiency and to help streamline the process across the globe, focusing more on the east to west core routes. When the 2M alliance was announced, the container ship industry was suffering from factors such as market conditions and excessive competition.
Together they accounted for 37% of the world share in the sea freight industry. As per their agreement they were allowed to rework or terminate it after completing 8 years, following which they were allowed to disassociate as per the terms and conditions mentioned in the agreement.
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the world’s largest container shipping company and Maersk is the second largest in the world. From February 2025, the two companies will transition to independent operation.
MSC is focusing only on sea freight, and promoting their fleet expansion as the shipping company as they have acquired more than 271 ships from August 2020. MSC overtook Maersk to become the leading container shipping company in January 2022.
Meanwhile, Maersk is trying to be an integrator of container logistics – merging and acquiring more logistics companies under its wing.
Both the companies have different strategies and with new emerging market situations this termination of the 2M alliance is something that will impact global logistics, and we need to see how this will impact global logistics.
